# Got an IRS or Ohio tax letter? A Stark County guide

IRS Ohio City of Canton

Checked against official sources October 12, 2026.

## Short answer

A tax letter names its sender and a response date. An IRS final notice of intent to levy opens a 30-day hearing window under 26 U.S.C. § 6330, and an Ohio assessment allows 60 days to pay or petition under ORC 5747.13. Free help includes the Taxpayer Advocate Service and the Community Legal Aid clinic.

One page for anyone holding a tax letter they did not expect from the IRS, Ohio, the city or the county Treasurer. It covers who sent it, which date matters, and where free help is.

## Before anything else

- Keep the letter and the envelope. The notice code and the response date are printed on the letter.
- Write the response date on a calendar, then count back a week to leave time for help.
- Check that the letter is real by calling the office at a number listed on its official website, not only the number in a surprise call or text.
- Never pay a tax bill with a gift card, prepaid card or wire transfer. The IRS says it does not demand payment that way.

## Who sent it, and the clock that matters

*Who sent it, and the clock that matters*

| Item | Details |
| --- | --- |
| IRS final notice (LT11, Letter 1058 or CP90) | 30 days to request a Collection Due Process hearing on Form 12153 (26 U.S.C. § 6330). |
| IRS CP2000 | A proposal, not a bill. Reply by the date printed on it, agreeing or disagreeing with documents. |
| IRS CP3219A (Notice of Deficiency) | 90 days to petition the U.S. Tax Court. The IRS cannot extend it. |
| Ohio Department of Taxation assessment | 60 days to pay or file a signed petition for reassessment (ORC 5747.13). |
| Ohio Attorney General collection letter | Unpaid Ohio balances are certified to the Attorney General (ORC 131.02). Payment plans: 888-301-8885. |
| City of Canton Income Tax Department | 424 Market Ave N, 330-430-7900. An assessment can be appealed to the local board of tax review within 60 days (ORC 718.11). |
| Stark County Treasurer (property tax) | 330-451-7814. A parcel delinquent about a year and a half can be referred to the Prosecuting Attorney for foreclosure. |
